Things to do in York

York’s Rich History:

Free to Visit:

York is a fascinating town when it comes to history. Boasting one of the best-preserved medieval city walls in the country, it’s a great place for history enthusiasts to take in medieval architecture. The city wall is entirely free to enter, and spans approximately 2.5 miles, offering unique views of the city. While we’re on the topic of free activities in York, no trip to this stunning city would be complete without a visit to the National Railway Museum! The National Railway Museum, located at York train station, happens to be one of the largest of its kind, offering a truly impressive display of locomotive history. The museum is free to visit, though donations are appreciated.

Museums and History:

In addition to the city wall and National Railway Museum, York is home to a number of fascinating museums and historic architecture. The York Minster Church, for example, is a truly magnificent thing to see. Constructed between 1220 and 1472, the York Minster is famous for its stunning stained glass windows and intricate stonework. Prices start at £22 per person (though kids under 17 enter free), with the option of paying an additional £6 to access the central tower, with sweeping views across the city. Alternatively, you could make your way to the York Castle Museum, located within an old prison, where you’ll find fascinating displays about the towns history, including a victorian era street where you can explore what life would have been like in the city hundreds of years ago.

Immersive Experiences:

Yorvik Viking Centre

If you’re staying in one of our large holiday houses in York with the family, you’re bound to enjoy the Yorvik Viking Centre. The Yorvik Viking Centre is a great activity to explore with kids, offering an insight into what life was like in York after it was invaded by Vikings in the year 866. The museum offers a ride through a reconstructed version of the city of Jorvik (York), offering a wonderfully immersive experience that really brings the city’s history to life. After the ride, guests are invited to explore state-of-the-art displays of unique and intriguing artefacts that were discovered in the city.

York Dungeon

While the Yorvik Viking Museum is a great option for families travelling with kids, the York Dungeon is equally exciting for adults. York is famed as ‘The Most Haunted City in Europe’, and the York Dungeon is the perfect spot to learn more about the city’s spooky stories. Here, you’ll find fully immersive experiences, with actors, sounds, smells… the works. The York Dungeon takes you back through the city’s darkest history, where you’ll learn about the infamous witch, Isabella Billington, the Torturer of York Castle, and more! In fact, if you’re into ghosts and spooky stories, York is a fantastic place to visit, with plenty of ghost tours around the city. Think you can spot a ghost?

Food, Pubs & Local Delicacies:

Plenty of options:

Another great part about renting group accommodation in York is that you’ll have access to a fabulous world of food! From easy street food to Michelin stars, there is something for everyone in this vibrant and beautiful city. For starters, York is rumoured to have 365 bars, with many claiming you could visit a different bar for every day of the year. In reality, there are actually closer 200 bars scattered around York, but even so, if you fancy a cocktail or a delicious glass of craft beer, you’re seriously spoilt for choice. For cocktails, you could check out options such as Botanist, Evil Eye Lounge, or Dyls. Alternatively, those who prefer beer might enjoy options such as Markekat, House of Trembling Madness, or The Hop!

Famous from Yorkshire:

It likely comes as no surprise that York is home to the famous Yorkshire Pudding, along with a few other signature dishes. While Yorkshire Pudding may be a popular addition to any Sunday roast throughout the UK, it originates from Yorkshire. No trip to York would be complete without one. In fact, you can even buy Yorkshire Wraps in York, which essentially consist of a full Sunday roast, wrapped inside a Yorkshire Pudding! Another, perhaps less well-known, Yorkshire treat is the Yorkshire Custard Tart. This tasty, sweet treat can be picked up at most of the many bakeries around York (and believe us when we tell you, there are a lot of bakeries in the area)!

Sweet Treats, Chocolate Tours, and The Shambles:

Got a sweet tooth? York is just the place to visit. The city is dotted with fudge and chocolate shops, so you won’t have a hard time finding tasty treats. It’s absolutely worth checking out the York Chocolate Story. The York Chocolate Story is ranked in the top 10% of attractions worldwide by TripAdvisor. It explores the history and production of chocolate in York. And yes, you’ll get to eat some along the way. One street that is particularly well-known for its multitude of chocolate, fudge, and sweet shops is The Shambles. This charming medieval street once served as the meat district, and was built to prevent excess sunlight from penetrating the streets in order to preserve the meat sold by the butchers who worked there. While the street might have a rather bloody history, today it is famous for its chocolatiers, fudge shops, and sweet shops.
