Things to do in Northumberland

Explore Roman History

Roman Army Museum

If you’re interested in history and would like to learn more about the Roman roots of Northumberland, the Roman Army Museum is a great place to deepen your understanding while enjoying a fun, interactive experience. The museum offers discounted tickets for families and children, and even has a little cafe with outdoor seating if you happen to be feeling a little peckish. The museum provides a fantastic opportunity to brush up your Roman history knowledge before visiting a site like Vindolanda or walking along Hadrian’s Wall.

Hadrian’s Wall

Hadrian’s Wall is a must-see for anyone who finds themselves in Northumberland. This wall once marked the northern frontier of the Roman Empire, stretching 73 miles across the landscape, and protected the Roman province of Britannia. Built around AD122 under Emperor Hadrian, it stood for nearly 300 years and was named a World Heritage Site in 1987. It is believed that the wall took approximately 6 years to build, and was constructed by roughly 15,000 men.

Vindolanda

Vindolanda is a fascinating archaeological excavation site of an old fort along Hadrian’s Wall. So far, it is believed that only 27% of the site has been excavated, so new things are always being discovered. Since opening to the public in 1970, this fascinating site has received over 5 million visitors, which is unsurprising given its fascinating historical significance. Vindolanda is located a 12-minute drive from the Royal Army Museum, and it is possible to purchase ‘time-saver’ tickets at the museum that will grant you access to both sites. It is recommended to visit the museum first, take a stroll along Hadrian’s wall after lunch and to end the day exploring Vindolanda and all it has to offer.

Bamburgh Beach and Castle

If you’re staying at Castle House, you absolutely have to pay a visit to Bamburgh Castle and Beach. Though very different experiences, Bamburgh Castle and Beach are located right next to each other and are both highly rated by past visitors.

Bamburgh Castle

Bamburgh Castle is a truly magnificent site. This stunning spot features breathtaking sea views and over 300 years of history. The castle is thought to have stood on the Northumberland coastline for as many as 1,400 years, and offers a wonderful opportunity for guests to embrace the history of the area. In fact, there are often events held at the castle, so be sure to check out their website, especially if you’re travelling with children. There are often activities such as ‘warrior school’ sessions, treasure hunts, and even dog sitting days with local rescue dogs. Whether you’re like a little history, some active entertainment, or just a beautiful view of the coastline, Bamburgh Castle is certainly worth a visit.

Bamburgh Beach & other top-rated beaches in the area

Rated as the best Northumberland beach by TripAdvisor, Bamburgh Beach is a lovely spot to enjoy a peaceful stroll or a relaxing beach day. With expanses of sandy coastline, topped off with a majestic castle towering in the background, it’s a site to behold. If you happen to have chosen Castle House for your adventure, you’ll be have easy access to both the beach and the castle, so be sure to check them out. Alternatively, you could visit one of the following top rated beaches in the area:

  • Embleton’s Bay
  • St Aidan Beach
  • Beadnell Bay Beach
  • Alnmouth Beach
  • Ross Back Sands Beach

Beautiful natural spaces to explore

Northumberland National Park

If you happen to enjoy the great outdoors, Northumberland is a great place for a holiday. The Northumberland National Park spans roughly 410 square miles, stretching from the Scottish border to just South of Hadrian’s Wall. The national park boasts a multitude of beautiful walking and hiking routes, as well as a visitor centre, and an abundance of small animals like squirrels, deer, and birds. Anyone with a love for nature and the great outdoors is bound to fall in love with the Northumberland National Park.

Waterfalls at Bowlees Visitor Centre

While the Bowlees Visitor Centre is closer to the North Pennines National Landscape, it’s certainly worth mentioning here as it can be easily accessed from houses such as Lakeside Hall, Rosemary House, and Hidden Manor within about an hour. The centre provides access to 3 waterfall walks, each of which is worth checking out:

High Force & Low Force: Two of the waterfalls in the area are named according to the force with which water falls from them. High force, the stronger of the two, has a height of about 21 meters, making for a truly impressive scene.

Summerhill Falls & Gibson’s Cave: The 3rd waterfall in the area, Summerhill Falls, has an unusual story to it! There is a small cave located behind this waterfall, which is referred to as “Gibson’s Cave.” According to urban legend, an outlaw named William Gibson hid from the constables of Barnard Castle in this cave some time during the 16th century. According to legend, Gibson was a rather charming man who earned the support of the locals, who are said to have brought him food to keep him going. True or not, the story adds a touch of folklore to an already magical location.
